The Bouroullec brothers' Algae produced in bioplastic by Vitra and Atelier LUMA

From June 2019 to January 2020 Atelier LUMA has collaborated with furniture manufacturer Vitra to produce the Algues modules, designed by the Bouroullec brothers. Edited by Vitra since 2004, the Algae are normally produced by an injection-molding process, from a fossile-fuel based plastic. Atelier Luma took up the challenge of producing them in bioplastic by developing a recipe for a composite loaded with algae.

This biosourced, biodegradable and recyclable bioplastic was integrated into the production line without requiring any changes to the process or tooling. It fulfills the same specifications as conventional plastic, in particular it has the suppleness and flexibility essential to the object, while conferring a renewed aesthetic.
