2022 Workshops Earth, Fibers et Pro-paille
In May 2022, Atelier LUMA invites you to participate in its workshops dedicated to earth and fiber construction.
In the continuity of the first workshops organized around the earth in May 2021, we propose for the 2022 season two weeks of training that will allow participants to apprehend and experiment with earth and waste from agriculture to obtain building materials adapted to the economic and ecological challenges of our time.
R&D earth and pisé training / May 2 to 5, 2022

Objectives of the training
- Learn to characterize local soils
- Learn to mix the resources needed to produce a regional rammed earth mix
- Learn to control the moisture content of a mix
- Learn to use the tools
- Learn how to build with rammed earth

Objectives of the training
- Obtain an official certification from the French Straw Building Network
- Learn the philosophy of the pro straw rules and the history of straw construction
- Obtain straw bales, organize a construction site and characteristics of the bales
- Learn the design rules and specifications for straw bales
- Learn the layout, cutting, straightening / handling, storage, tarpaulin / masonry reception, ground clearance
- Learn about water vapor management and air tightness
- Know the different wood structures and filling methods
- Learn how to fix, compress and fill voids
- Learn how to make fastening layers: fire protection and shear test
- Learn about bays, equipment, siding and cladding
- Learn how to manage disorders, insurability, standards and regulations

Discovery of fibers R&D - May 14, 2022

Objectives of the training
- Understand Atelier LUMA's philosophy and the R&D approach developed with local fibers
- Experiment with materials and resources
- Reflect on the formulation of materials according to the technical qualities sought
- Exchange with Atelier LUMA professionals and specialized guests
- Discover the possible applications with the developed materials
- Visit Atelier LUMA, The Tower and the current Lot 8 construction site
- Understand the process of a specific research: acoustic panels developed
- Focus on rice straw and sunflower at different scales
- Mineral binders and their specificities associated with fibers

These workshops and the discovery day are part of the Building for Uncertain Futures project, which develops the rehabilitation of the Magasin Électrique building located in the Parc des Ateliers. This building will become Atelier LUMA's new residence.
Developed in collaboration with BC Architects and Assemble, the rehabilitation of Lot 8 implements design strategies and materials suited to architectural projects built for uncertain futures.
By mapping the Arles region, the project team identified a wide variety of resources and know-how to reconstitute building materials based on the principles of non-extractive architecture.
